Why you should start meditating

More and more people are flocking to meditation. Despite the growing popularity, many of us still find it hard to pin down exactly how it works. It is impossible to clearly evaluate the benefits that meditation brings. In this sense, science comes proving the positive impact of meditation on our health and well-being.

Here are 4 scientific facts that prove the benefits of meditation:

1. Meditation affects the grey matter of the brain

Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), scientists from Harvard found that brain cells are restored, memory, learning ability and concentration are improved during meditation.

2. Meditation reduces the risk of heart disease

In the study, which was conducted by Schneider, Grim, Rainford and other scientists, 201 men and women with coronary heart disease were divided into 2 groups. The first was to undergo a program of transcendental meditation, the second was occupied with health education. After 5.5 years of the experiment, the risk of heart attacks and strokes for the first group decreased by 48%.

3. Meditation relieves depression and reduces stress

An interesting experiment was conducted in Belgium. 400 teenagers aged 13 to 20 years from different schools were recruited to participate. The study revealed that students practicing meditation had lower rates of depression and stress than those who didn't meditate.

4. Meditation will help you increase your productivity and concentration

David levy of the University of Washington and Jacob Wabrock of the University of Arizona proved in one of their studies that meditation allows you to stay focused when performing a task regardless of any distractions.

And here's what celebrities say about meditation:

  • Benjamin Franklin: «Reading makes a full man, meditation a profound man, discourse a clear man».
  • Jennifer Aniston: «Meditation helps you concentrate and quickly lowers your stress level. You interact with the world easier and better afterwards, become calmer. You begin to feel a kind of peaceful joy that prevails over everything».
  • Sting: «Yoga introduced me to a style of meditation. The only meditation I would have done before would be in the writing of songs».
  • Katy Perry: «I needed to find an internal balance. I've learned this thing called «Transcendental meditation» and I am trying to do the most. This meditation lasts for 20 minutes and should be done twice a day. I only meditate once a day but it still works».
  • Ellen DeGeneres: «It feels good. Kinda like when you have to shut your computer down, just sometimes when it goes crazy, you just shut it down and when you turn it on, it's okay again. That's what meditation is to me».
  • Oprah Winfrey: «Meditation results to a better career, greater productivity and creativity all around».

Instead of questioning whether meditation is beneficial or not, simply give it a try and start meditating. It won't take much of your time. Just 10-15 minutes a day and very soon you will feel your health and the world around you changing.
